A simple rule: clean, comfortable, and not distracting. If you’d feel fine wearing it to a nice casual restaurant, you’ll be fine wearing it here. And if you’re still unsure, a quick look at the church’s photos online will show you what people typically wear. Please don’t let an outfit be the reason you stay home. We care far more that you’re here than what you’re wearing.
Can I attend if I've never been to church before?
Yes. You don’t need any church background, you don’t need to bring a Bible, and you don’t need to know when to stand or what to say. You can walk in, sit down, and simply observe. There’s no membership required and no pressure to participate in anything you’re not comfortable with.
If it helps, tell a greeter it’s your first time. They’re there specifically to help newcomers find their way, point out the restrooms, and answer questions. You will not be singled out, asked to stand up, or put on the spot. Most churches, including ours, know that’s the last thing a first-time guest wants.
What happens during the service
Every church is a little different, but most Sunday services follow a similar rhythm. Here’s what you can generally expect at Step of Faith.
Worship and singing
Services usually begin with worship music. People often stand to sing, but you’re free to sit and listen if that’s more comfortable. Worship isn’t a performance to watch, it’s a way for the church to respond to God with gratitude. You’re welcome to join in or simply take it in.
Prayer
At some point there will be prayer, sometimes led from the front, sometimes as a quiet moment. You can pray along, or just sit quietly. There’s no special posture or words you have to use.
The message
A pastor will share a message from the Bible. At Step of Faith, we teach the Bible plainly and practically, verse by verse, so it connects to real life and real questions. You don’t need to have read the Bible before, the goal is that you leave with something you can actually use.
The offering
A basket or bag may be passed for giving. As a guest, please feel free to simply pass it along. Giving is for people who call the church home, and no one is watching or counting. You are never expected to give on your first visit.
Communion (sometimes)
Some services include communion, a small piece of bread and a sip of juice or wine that remembers Jesus’ sacrifice. If it’s offered and you’d rather not take part, it’s completely fine to stay in your seat. Nobody will think twice about it.
After the service
Services usually end with a final song or prayer. Afterward, people often linger to talk, and many churches offer coffee or snacks. If you’re feeling social, introduce yourself to a greeter or the person next to you. If you’d rather slip out and process quietly, that’s perfectly fine too. There’s no obligation to stay.
